[W]e’re sort of shortening and simplifying the backstory so that new readers can jump in and understand what’s going on from the very first issue. – Jim Lee, DC Comics, in an NPR interview about starting several of the issues over.
It’s an understandable sentiment
wanting to start all over again
when you’re painted into a corner
and the story has gotten too complex.
Wanting to start all over again,
we scrutinize the arc of our existence
and the story has gotten too complex
for us to ever catch up.
We scrutinize the arc of our existence
for meaning to the specifics. It’s too late
for us to ever catch up,
but we sense too much important is missing
from our specific meaning. It’s too late
in this poem for the heroes to appear
and we sense something important is missing
so our hero appears briefly as a crimson blur.
In this poem when the heroes finally appear
it’s an understandable sentiment
to make our hero appear briefly as a crimson blur
when you’re painted into a corner.
A worthy comment on the news of the day. Often too much of importance is missing; and indeed the heroes only make cameo appearances!
It’s too late
in this poem for the heroes to appear
and we sense something important is missing
so our hero appears briefly as a crimson blur.
My favorite stanza, you made the permutations earn their place in the poem, well done.
I really enjoyed the circular way you presented the ideas here–really gives the feel of being painted into a corner, and the repeated line pattern reinforces and enhances that. Very villanelle-ish, in free verse. Creative approach, and it works well. Also liked the substance–‘we scrutinize the arc of our existence’ one of several strong lines.
I think you are right about how they paint the hero in poems. Very well done and your closing is excellent way to express how a hero is painted
